Federer – better than ever

Before delivering an analysis on the Swiss Maestro, let´s conclude the most obvious: Federer is better than ever!

I have read and heard several times the last year that Federer should be losing ground, indicated by the fact that he has lost his position as number one in the world. Some people argue that the quality of his game is lower than it was 2003-2007 – which reveals a lack of knowledge as well as being incorrect.

The truth is that Federer played his best tennis during the last year. Last night he won his second straight Masters title (in Indian Wells), and since September his match records are stunningly 39-2.

But even last year´s French Open and US Open must, virtually speaking, be deemed as new conquests of tennis. The semifinal against Novak Djokovic at Roland Gaross 2011 displayed the strongest tempo and game quality in a tennis match ever.

In order to make the assessment above one has to consider the brutal competition of today. Hewitt, Safin, Ferrero and Roddick in all honor, but comparing them with Nadal, Djokovic, Murray etc is not possible. Nadal was number two already in 2005, but his level of action is substantially higher today. In order to cope with the new generation, Roger Federer quite simply has had to bring his game to a new level. He accepted the challenge – and made it all through to success.
